Impact of hurricanes on agricultural production risk
This project, lead by Hunter Biram at University of Arkansas, uses NOAA data on the location and wind speeds of hurricanes to examine their impact on agricultural losses. In the associated paper, we demonstrate the importance of measuring hurricane incidence correctly and find significant regional heterogeneity in the losses caused by hurricanes. The figure on the right demonstrates how we used the NOAA hurricane data to determine which counties were “treated” or affected by a given hurricane.

Effects of irrigation technologies on groundwater use in Kansas
This work aims to clarify how improvements in the efficiency of irrigation technologies impacted irrigators use of groundwater resources in Kansas. In the associated paper, co-authored with Nathan Hendricks, we investigate how irrigators adjusted the quantity of groundwater extracted and the acreage irrigated after two changes in irrigation technology.
